SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

 

 Laser

1. RULES

1.1.     The regatta will be governed by the current Racing Rules of Sailing (RRS 2021-2024), the Prescriptions of US Sailing, and the Rules of the Laser/ILCA Class.

1.2.     The regatta is open to Laser/ILCA boats.  Only Members of the Michigan Sailing Club (MSC) may sail club owned Laser/ILCA boats.

1.3.  The Laser/ILCA Class Association rules are changed as follows:

1.3.1. Radial, 4.7, and Intensity rigging is allowed.

2. NOTICES TO COMPETITORS

Notices to competitors will be posted on the official notice board located on the front porch of the sailing clubhouse.

3. CHANGES TO SAILING INSTRUCTIONS

Any change to the sailing instructions will be posted on the official notice board, 30 minutes prior to the first Warning signal on the day it will take effect.

4. SIGNALS MADE ASHORE

Signals made ashore will be displayed at the dock. If a postponement is signaled ashore, the warning signal will be made not less than 20 minutes after AP is lowered.

5. SCHEDULE

The schedule can be viewed on the race page for the specific event on the MSC website.

6. CLASS FLAG

The class flag will be the International Code Flag “Q”. (solid yellow flag)

7. RACING AREA

The racing area will be the majority of Baseline Lake, as deemed appropriate by the Race Committee.

8. THE COURSES

The courses will be Windward-Leeward or Triangle-Windward-Leeward. The course will be designated by the signal flags or a numerical placard as described below.

APPENDIX A shows the courses, course designations, and the marks in order. All marks shall be left to port. The start/finish line is open for other legs of the course.

9. MARKS

All the course marks will be Red Orange. The Start and Finish marks will be Yellow balls

10.   OBSTRUCTIONS

11.   THE START

11.1. The starting line will be between a staff displaying a red flag on the race committee boat and the starting mark.

11.2. Races will be started by using US Sailing Appendix L 11.1 (3 min. starts). This modifies RRS rule 26.

12.   CHANGE OF THE NEXT LEG OF THE COURSE

Changing the next leg of the course after the start or shortening the course shall be signaled verbally.  This modifies RRS 32, 33, 33a, and 33b.

13.   THE FINISH

The finish line will be between a staff displaying a red flag on the race committee boat and the starting mark.

14.   PENALTY SYSTEM

The Scoring Penalty, RRS 44.3, will not apply.

15.   TIME LIMITS

The time limit for each race will be 1 hour for the first boat to finish. Boats finishing more than 30 minutes after the first boat that sails the course finishes will be scored DNF. This changes RRS 35 and A4.

16.   PROTESTS

16.1 A boat intending to file a protest shall inform the RC before the next race starts.

16.2 Protests shall be in writing and delivered within 30 minutes after the time of  the race committee boat docking after the final race.

17.   SCORING

The Low Point System of Appendix A of the racing rules will apply with the following modification: When fewer than five races have been completed, a boat’s series score will be the total of her race scores (No Throw Out). One race constitutes a regatta.

28.   PRIZES

Trophies will be awarded to the top three skippers.
