www.MichiganSailingClub.orgBACKGROUND AND RATIONALE
This policy governs the storage of boats owned by someone other than the Michigan Sailing Club (club) or the University of Michigan Sailing Team on the club grounds at Baseline Lake.
The right to store a boat at the club is not a perquisite of membership; it is an extra-ordinary privilege that can be granted to only a few members. In particular, this policy is intended to address the following concerns:
1) Encouraging the use of club equipment and participation in club activities;
2) Keeping the club property free of clutter and, in particular, of boats that seldom sail;
3) Making limited space available to club members in an equitable fashion.
POLICIES:
1) No private boat shall be stored at the club for more than 7 days without advance permission of the Executive Board.
2) The Executive Board may grant any member permission to keep a boat at the club subject to the following constraints:
a.The boat must be non-motorized and 18 feet or less in length.
b.The requester must have been a member for at least two terms or be a registered University of Michigan student.
c.The requestor must agree to one of the following:
i) Perform a clearly specified amount of volunteer work on the club’s behalf during the period that the boat is stored at the club. The exact work to be performed is negotiable; a suggested level of effort is the equivalent of teaching at boat school for 3 hours every second week.
ii) Active participation as a member of the U of M Sailing Team.
iii) Give blanket permission for the boat to be used by club members while it is stored at the club.
d.Approval may be granted for up to one season. All approvals expire at the beginning of each season and must be renewed to remain valid.
3) Temporary storage: An officer of the club may grant permission for temporary storage of up to 7 days to any member or non-member. Item (2) does not apply to temporary storage.
4) The club will not be responsible in the event of theft of or damage to the boat or any related gear.
5) The location of each boat at the club shall be determined by the Dockmaster. The Dockmaster may move a boat on the club property in the owner’s absence.
6) All boats must be of acceptable appearance, in sailable shape, and be sailed regularly.
7) The Executive Board may ask that a boat be removed from the club property for failure to adhere to any provision of this agreement, or for any reason that it considers to be in the best interests of the club.
8) If the Executive Board asks that a boat be removed from the club property, or if the Executive Board makes a good-faith effort to contact a boat's owner in order to request that it be removed and fails to make contact, and if after three months have elapsed the boat is still on the club property,the club may take ownership of the boat and sell or dispose of it as it sees fit.
9) Any person storing a boat at the club must sign the agreement below and submit a copy to the Executive Board.
