First Regatta of 2021 was a Success!
Our first regatta of the year was a huge success! For this event we partnered up with our new friends at the Greater Detroit Sunfish Club and hosted a Sunfish regatta at our facilities on Baseline Lake.
GDSC member Derrick Fries took the top position and our own Jim Grogan took the top place finish with a non-racing sail which is quite a handicap to the North built race sails. 2nd place in that category was John Starkweather, 3rd was Galen. This was also Jim, John, and Galen’s first sunfish regatta.
Some sunfish racing legends joined us for this regatta and many have been racing these boats for 30,40, 50 yrs.
Congratulations to you all!
You can check out the official results and photos here.
We plan on at least one more Sunfish regatta in September and there was even talk of possibly adding one more. Come on out and join us!
An extra special thanks to Peggy for volunteering to officiate the event and to Charlie Scott for volunteering to take some awesome photographs!
Here’s what GDSC had to say:
On a Sunday that opened grey and drizzly, stopped just as it was time to rig up for racing and developed into a sunny, beautiful 70 degree afternoon. Sailing on Baseline Lake, a strong fleet with developing racers hit the water for four races. Wind direction we called loosely out of the S-SE with strength of 3-9 and maybe one puff of 12. Carey Jones of the Michigan Sailing Club has been developing a Sunfish fleet at the club and as he’s cross membered withe Greater Detroit Sunfish Club invited all to have the first GDSC racing day there. The Michigan Sailing Club has a clubhouse with bathrooms and changing rooms, lots of boat storage, a wood stove (can cook on it), a large grassy area and beachfront for boat storage and launching. the Michigan Sailing Club is planning another one of these dates for September and the Greater Detroit Sunfish Club season includes stops at Watkins Lake, Muskegon Lake, Les Cheneaux Islands in Lake Huron, and Higgins Lake. The club’s schedule is available at https://bit.ly/3wdkQzC. There is plenty of time left to get involved with GDSC and qualify for the season’s championship. We’re off to a GREAT start! -Gail Turluck
Carey and the Rest of MSC,
Thank you so much for hosting the GDSC yesterday. We had a great time and made many new friends. Give Peggy our thanks and gratitude for doing an excellent job running the races. Hopefully the pictures that Charles took will be great. -Kirk Beadle
