US SAILING CERTIFIED INSTRUCTOR COURSE AVAILABLE

URGENT!

We currently have a US Sailing Level 1 Course set to take place at MSC May 16-18th, 2025.
As of 3/12/25 there are still 5 available slots.
If you are interested in getting your Level 1 certification you should sign up immediately!

THE ONLY WAY TO SIGN UP FOR THIS COURSE IS THROUGH THE US SAILING WEBSITE, HERE: https://www.ussailing.org/education/instructor/small-boat-instructor-programs/level-1-instructor/small-boat-level-1/

PLEASE SIGN UP IMMEDIATELY IF YOU ARE INTERESTED.

Please be aware that you will need some additional things to complete you certification:
  • Current US Sailing Membership (every year)
  • CPR/First Aid certification (Jane Tucker runs these courses and are free of charge to our instructors) (every two years)
  • NASBLA Safe Boating Certificate (Michigan Safe Boating Certificate qualifies) (life)
  • Valid SafeSport certification (provided by US Sailing as part of the Level 1 course) (every year)
  • Your Level 1 Certification needs to be renewed (paid for) every three years. No additional testing is necessary if there’s been no lapse in your certification.

If you would like to become a Certified Instructor please follow the steps below and we will consider asking US Sailing to host a course at the Club if there is enough Member interest. If that happens we will notify you of the class and you can sign up for it through US Sailing’s website. FYI, US Sailing also offers courses at may other locations.

The US Sailing Course is a PAID course but the Club will reimburse course fees after you have taught 10 Saturday and/or weekday lessons for the Club.

Requirements: The course we will reimburse you for below is NOT a “learn to sail course” or a “how to operate the safety boat course”.  It is expected that you already are able to sail at a strong Helm rating level and have participated in teaching sailing. Attendance all days is mandatory.  It is a rigorous course with several written tests, on-water drills and in-class sessions.  For those with limited teaching experience, it would be a good idea to help out in boat school on Saturdays prior to the course.

*You must be a “Basic Rated” member in good standing with strong Helm skills to register as interested below.

Steps to begin:

  1. Get: Your Boating Safety Certificate
    • Please email us a copy of your certificate.
  2. Read: Water Comfort Check
  3. SIGN UP HERE: Add your name to our list and we will notify you when we have a course at the Club.
  4. Alternatively, you can find a course elsewhere.
