Winter Meeting – Marine VHF Radios

Marine VHF Radios, presented by Klaus Wolter

Our first Winter Meeting will be held on Wednesday, January 23, 7pm at the Dexter Library.

A VHF marine radio is important safety equipment on-board any watercraft. Commercial and recreational vessels alike use VHF marine radios for ship to ship and ship to shore communication. This radio equipment can be critical in the case of an emergency, communicating with other boaters, keeping tabs on what is going in the water around you and listening to NOAA marine weather forecasts.Their use is not very important on smaller lakes like Baseline, but when we do trips to bigger waters like lake Erie or Tawas Bay, having them on our boats becomes much more important.

This will be an open format discussion starting with a basic introduction to VHF marine radios and their usage, but the direction of the discussion will be determined by what attendees are interested in talking about.

Klaus Wolter will do a hands on demo with hand-held and fixed mount (big boat) radios; we will talk about how to use them, getting them to work to the best of their ability and help you decide what type of radio is best for you. Klaus (N8NXF) maintained VHF and UHF radio equipment for an amateur radio club for several years. Whatever your experience level, bring your interest, your questions and your radios with manuals if you have them to Dexter Library on Wednesday, January 23rd @ 7PM.

Meet at Jolly Pumpkin kitchen and taproom afterwards.
