Modern upgrades make the Sunfish a blast!
Is the Laser too tender? Too small for you? Try the Sunfish! The Sunfish’s hard chine shape makes it much more stable than the Laser. Its deep wide cockpit gives roominess. And the boom height can be adjusted to make it just right to get under. Mark your calendars for the May 16th Sunfish regatta. Registration is required to
reserve a boat.
Remember Sunfish from the old days?
Modern upgrades make a big difference. The boat now has a universal tiller joint (instead of the tiller extension bolt) and a long tiller. You can sit far enough forward and hike hard so the boat is more balanced and fast! A real mainsheet block and cleat give you fast and subtle control of the sail. A full-sized, modern daggerboard helps you point.
Make that S-fish swim!
Frustrated with getting stuck in irons every time you tack? – It happens with that old rudder design and big low-aspect sail. Instead, roll tack the boat around, hard, and you won’t get stuck. You know how running with the Laser by-the-lee is faster and more stable? Same with the Sunfish, and it really confuses the other types of boats on the race course.
What about that screwy asymmetric sail?
The Sunfish does not have the same speed or pointing on both tacks. But you know what? Every other Sunfish you are racing against has the same issue! Join our Sunfish clinics to learn more.
Regatta 5/16 at MSC with the Greater Detroit Sunfish Club.
We’ll welcome the GDSC as they run the racing at our club on Sunday, May 16th. Many of the GDSC members sailed at MSC in the 60s and 70s as college students. Meet Sunfish world champ Derrick Fries, author of The Sunfish Bible and US Sailing’s Start Sailing Right, and Race Chair of the GDSC.

We have four dry and class-weight (135#) competitive Sunfish. The Phantom is a Sunfish knockoff. The Phantom can join the May 16 race course if all the Sunfish are taken. MSC members with privately-owned Sunfish may join the fun too. Sunfish rigging and sailing clinics will be offered on weekends in early May. Watch your email for announcements. See you on the lake in a Sunfish!
