2021 Bonechiller Regatta- Congratulations Vince & Paul!

2021 BoneChiller Regatta: Results and Photos

Sailors,

We had yet again a wonderful Bonechiller event. On our second attempt to run it, we had good wind, no rain, warmer than expected, and it was a great day to close the sailing season with.

We ran 6 races, well run by our reliable PRO George Griswold, with minimal wait time between races. We have used the standard triangle course #3. On the PRO boat, Russel has recorded results and emailed them on shore after every race to Jeanne to have them fed into the computer in almost real time. This looks a great idea, first tested last year, and may work in the future too. Special thanks to Dr. Michael who was our official photographer and took some amazing photos to ensure the legacy of this event.

On the marks boat, captain Jim and his crew Charlie have adjusted marks according to wind shifts.

On shore, Jeanne wore two hats and in addition to fill secretary duties, she together with Russel, Donna and Sandy, has also treated us with a warm meal including a tasty Broccoli soup and rolls, Romanian Apple cake and cider. Very well received after six races on the water in bone chilling wind.

Overall, the 2021 Bonechiller Regatta was no different from previous years, in the sense that it proved again how fun, excitement, and adrenaline, can balance the outside temperature naming the event, and making participants congratulate themselves from not bailing out.

Congratulations to Paul T. and Vincent for winning the race, their names will be engraved on the club’s wall of fame.

Many thanks to the RC team making this event possible and congratulations to all the participants. See the results attached.

As you may know, this is the last event I am organizing as the club’s Racing Chair, and I am taking the opportunity to thank the Club for the great honor I had serving on its Board, to see a new generation of members testing the waters in the fine art of sailing racing, and to wish a successful tenure to Racing Chair Elect Jim.

I plan to use the extra time to get more involved in instruction, where I will run the Virtual Sailing Class again this winter, and the Advanced Sailing Class next spring. I will also spend time on boat repair projects and fleet maintenance. Those projects are collected here: http://michigansailingclub.org/boat-repair-items/, and I am encouraging everyone to add your names to column “G” (Volunteers working on it)

I hope you see you signing up for classes, boat repair projects, racing, and having fun on the water.

I am wishing everyone a wonderful sailing season in 2022,
Ovidiu

Thanks to everyone who came out to race and run the regatta, and especially my crew Vince who helped me win this thing. A nice turnout with 12 boats competing in just about perfect weather. A fine capstone for our outgoing Race Chair Ovidiu.

Some observations:

There were several close results – the difference between first and second place was only two points, and with one race decided by four seconds it could have easily gone the other way.
3rd and 4th places were also determined by only two points with fourth and fifth decided by three points.
6th and 7th were tied with 34 points each and it had to go to a tiebreaker to decide that contest.
Except for the Prindle and the FD, the Portsmouth handicap didn’t make any difference. All the other boats were scored in order of their crossing the finish line.
No capsizes! Yay!

Looking forward to next year and the arrival of the Melges 15s.

Best wishes to our new Race Chair Jim.

-Paul
