1st Annual Commodore’s Cup!
Hello MSC Sailors,
The first annual Commodore’s Cup was a smashing success. Much fun was had and there were plenty of smiles to go around. Conditions were sporty with winds in the 10-15 knot range. Baseline Lake did not disappoint with the usual gusty and shifty wind conditions. This made collecting cards more of a challenge than originally planned. There were several poker hands played with less than five cards (one even placed!). There were a few capsizes and bumps but fairly minor occurrences. Cards were the main casualties of the day with several lost to the lake. Epic stories of the event will persist, ask those who were there.
Five distribution stations for cards were located around the lake and sailors had to visit each one to pick up a playing card to gather a poker hand. We did our best to get everyone out for a sail in the exceptional conditions. The best part was that all who participated “won” the event. The poker hand thing was just an excuse to cover the lake with sailboats.
We did fall short of the goal to get all of our sailboats on the lake. If you weren’t able to make it, please plan on it for next year. I have set a tentative date of August 9th, 2025. This proved to be one of the best events we’ve had at the club in recent years. More than 33 sailors were present, with several helpers. We need more than 60 people to get all boats out. It was nice to see the parking lot mostly full.
My quest to level the playing field with random luck sort of worked. We had the Parhurst family in third place, Souha & Jane in second, with Carey winning the event with three of a kind. A cup for a perpetual trophy has been procured but just needs to be mounted on a suitable base.
Much thanks to Rachel G. for helping organize, designing & purchasing prizes and keeping me on track, Deb G. for bringing some yummy snacks, Kevin B., Matt B., Kirk B., Donna S., Charlie S., Chas, Jim Re., James A., Emma H.and Bob F. for help to run the event.
If you have suggestions or want to help with planning next year’s event please let me know. I’m sure it will be an Epic event!
Fair winds and following seas,
Jeff
