Helm Rating

Congratulations! If you have landed here you have likely just earned your Basic Rating! Wondering what is next?

Once you have become a Basic Rated member, the next step is to enhance your skills and become a Helm Rated Member. Helm rated Members can open the club for “Open Sailing” in winds up to 15 knots. To earn the Helm Rating, you’ll need to demonstrate an intermediate level of sailing ability and power boat driving skills, as well as participation and knowledge of the club’s operations. We encourage you to become more involved in the club community and obtain your Helm Rating!


Helm Rating Steps:

    1. You must already have: A Basic Rating.
    2. Print: Helm Rating SHEET
    3. Reference: Helm Rating Guide
    4. Reference: Powerboat Skills List
    5. Sign Up: Add your name to our list
      • When you sign up we will add you to our Helm Candidate email list.
    6. Get: Your Boating Safety Certificate
      • ALL Helm candidates MUST get this certificate regardless of age per MSC policy to even begin training in the motorboat.
        • Anyone born after 06/30/1996 MUST have certificate on your person at all times when operating the motorboat per law.

        • Please email us a copy of your certificate once completed.
    7. Attend: Any or all intermediate/online learning opportunities offered on the webpage (See below.)
    8. Be: Proactive
