The Society for Space Law and Law of the Sea

The Society for Space Law and Law of the Sea (SSLLS) at the University of Michigan aims to foster dialogue on the intersections between law and some of the planet’s last frontiers: deep space and the high seas. As technology rapidly evolves, we invite students to push the legal conversation around these subjects by engaging with global thought leaders in space law, transportation law, and admiralty law. Our mission is to promote internationally focused legal analysis by addressing both historical and emerging issues related to the sea and space.

One of the recurring themes of our discussions has been the responsible management of natural resources. In an effort to give students a much needed break from studying and connect with the natural resources around them we organized an educational outing with the Michigan Sailing Club on BaseLine Lake.

This event offered a wonderful opportunity to connect our academic conversations to real-world experiences, helping students understand the importance of advocating for sustainable and responsible use of these resources – as well as an opportunity to enjoy Michigan’s natural beauty.

We were warmly welcomed by the Michigan Sailing Club’s knowledgeable and enthusiastic team, who provided hands-on lessons in basic sailing knots, offered an educational tour of club boats, and took us out on the lake for an authentic sailing experience. It was an incredible way to bring the concepts we study into a tangible setting, and just a great chance to get out of the Reading Room for a few hours before Midterms!

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Anna, Carey, Meg, Rachel, and all the volunteer members who shared their time and expertise with us. We can’t wait for our next visit!
